Smiley’s Shrimp Stop Brand Design

When a client asks if you can create a mascot that will potentially become a 25-foot-tall fiberglass statue in front of his restaurant you say “YES”. That was the assignment. Chef Eddie had a vision to bring a retro American fast food shack specializing in fried shrimp to the South Side of Chicago and it was my job to bring that vision to life.

Due to a worldwide pandemic that you may remember; the restaurant was never able to open. However, the work lives on in hopes of someday seeing that giant fried shimpy boy standing proudly in front of his South Side home.

How did we get here?

Below you will see sketches and a few alternate designs that we felt ultimately didn’t hit the mark. But, they are still worth showing to illustrate the process it takes to get to a final design.

Chef Eddie: Can you show Smiley cooked up and dousing himself with cocktail sauce?

Me: I thought you’d never ask.

We may never get to see the real life Smiley but thanks to AI we can get a glimpse of what he may have looked like.
